Some of Dorothy’s memories are, at least, bittersweet. This is hardly new in our literature from Jonathan Swift’s “ A Modest Proposal” to Hannibal Lecter’s penchant for liver to the unforgettable scene in “ The Road” and even the crazed parody of the French film “ Delicatessen,” the notion of eating human flesh has simultaneously attracted and repelled bookish tastes for centuries. Dorothy has a lot to say and at times her tangents about truffle hunting, prison cuisine and acrobatic love-making threaten to distract from the juicy marrow of her confessions.ĭorothy will get to the circumstances of her arrest in good time, but she lets us know at once about her passion (food of all kinds), profession (restaurant critic) and obsession (cannibalism). Meet Dorothy Daniels, now 50-something and incarcerated at Bedford Hills, the supposedly upscale women’s prison in Connecticut where Stewart also did time, albeit for a different crime. The People We Hate at the Wedding doesn’t stray too far from the formula of our streaming-dominated visual landscape, but a witty screenplay from the Molyneux sisters and strong performances from Janney, Platt and Bell make it reliably diverting. Scanlon’s breezy production is heavy on the laughs but light on the details - a turn from the slow-burn, nostalgia-laden Set It Up. The airy comedy - directed by Claire Scanlon ( Set it Up) and based on the novel by Grant Ginder - chronicles an acerbic family reunion fueled by the fantasies of its emotional matriarch (Allison Janney). Like watching a school play or something. Maybe that's typical for Japanese live action films (this must have been the first one I watched, so I have nothing to compare it to), but I just couldn't buy the act, it was too theatrical. Actually, most of the acting just seemed like. But more importantly, I found the storytelling just plain awkward: the main character meets his friends and they reminisce their past, but the way these past memories were brought up just didn't seem natural. One of the big arcs in the book, as well as some minor scenes, just didn't make it into this film. Let's start with the most obvious: in order to fit the story into the screen time, it had to be shortened. My expectations were let down, and my wife didn't even watch the movie to the end. And let me tell you: watching it soon after reading the book isn't such a good idea. Instead, I discovered this live action film which we decided to watch together. I read it later, really liked it too and went on to check if it had perhaps been turned into an anime already. My wife bought this book during our vacation. ![]() ![]() ![]() The story of how the sixty-five-year-old navigator singlehandedly circumnavigated the globe, the whole way battling hostile seas as well as his boat's numerous design flaws, is a tale of superhuman tenacity and endurance to be read and reread by sailors and armchair adventurers alike.įirst published in 1967, just months after the completion of Chichester's historic journey, Gipsy Moth Circles the World was an instant international best-seller.
